UCSC Humanities

The Humanities and Social Sciences project was constructed on a centrally located site north of Cowell College at the corner of McLaughlin Drive and Hagar Drive on the UCSC campus. It provides 85,000 SF of space to house faculty offices and classrooms to serve the Division of Humanities and the Education Department of the Division of Social Sciences. Three separate buildings are clustered around a central plaza area set within a heavily wooded site. The complex provides faculty and administrative offices, computer labs, smaller classrooms and a separate 300 seat lecture hall. Several large stands of existing trees were preserved; therefore, tree shoring and protection were very important components of construction. The Humanities 1 and 2 buildings are steel framed with concrete structural shear walls and are varying in height (four and six stories). The one story Lecture Hall consists of wood framing and exposed concrete masonry unit walls.
